Calm Sleep marks the company’s first new product in over a decade. The goal was to help users improve sleep quality by building consistent routines, supported by Calm’s content and behavioral science.
I led the design team to define the end-to-end, habit-forming user experience that helped users build sustainable improvements in their sleep. Partnering with user research and content strategy, we identified our audience personas and their needs and behaviors. I led the development of our science and research backed Sleep Readiness framework and the structure of daily plans. We mapped how tasks, tips, and content could be personalized to each user to create holistic sleep practices. This foundation drove a 50% increase in engagement compared to the product’s first iteration.
I also defined the modernized visual system for Calm Sleep, introducing the first major update to Calm’s brand. This included creating our night and daytime glow visual language, designed to bring optimism and motivation while grounding the experience in the emotional context of sleep. Working closely with Calm Studios, we extended this system through visual imagery, animations, and sound design, layering in sensory elements that reinforced progress, atmosphere, and mood. The visual system also laid the foundation for Calm’s updated design system, balancing meaningful brand moments with modern aesthetics, and serving as the starting point for evolving the Calm Classic app.
For a polished release, I worked closely with engineering and QA throughout implementation, staying hands-on to refine details and align on feasibility across platforms. I also partnered with marketing and user acquisition to carry the Calm Sleep experience across mediums and surfaces, making sure the story of the product resonated wherever users encountered it.
Together, these efforts produced an immersive, polished product that earned a 4.8★ App Store rating and was recognized in outlets like Fast Company, Tech Crunch, and the Apple App Store for shaping the future of sleep.
