This is one of two of my pieces for Spoke Art’s annual Wes Anderson Bad Dads show.
I initially started out illustrating the one of my favorite scenes in the movie. The cathartic scene when (what’s left of) the crew of the Bellafonte finally meet the jaguar shark. I wanted to keep the dark and moodiness of the scene with the only lights coming from the Deep Search and the glow of the fluorescent snappers.
The movie, Steve Zissou, and his crew are based off of Jacque Cousteau and his documentary travels. I wanted to pay homage, and kind of be cheeky by making a Jacque Cousteau-esque poster, while also being meta and connecting back to a particular scene in the movie.
If you’ve seen the movie, there’s a scene where Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is approached by a man with a stack of posters. After signing a few, Zissou tells him to just forge the rest. The poster is for the latest installment of the Zissou documentaries “The Jaguar Shark part 2”. Whether or not the signature is authentic is up to you :P.
